Festive cleaning: How to remove dirt from textured concrete flooring?

November, 10 2023

Textured concrete flooring is an excellent choice for certain areas of your home, including garages, driveways and outdoor spaces. They offer a slip resistant and highly durable surface, ensuring maximum safety. However, the textured surface that reduces the risk of slipping also traps dirt that has to be cleaned periodically. Here, we share some of the useful insights related to textured concrete and ways of cleaning it.

  1. Cleaning tools and materials:

First of all, you need to get the cleaning tools and equipment sorted before you get started. You will need the following when cleaning textured concrete flooring:

  • Broom: The first step would be to remove the loose dirt and dust trapped in the flooring using a broom or a dust mop.
  • Vacuum cleaner: If you have a vacuum cleaner handy, you do not need a broom, as the machine can help remove the loose dust and dirt.
  • Mild dish soap: A mild dish soap is necessary to clean the floor. Alternatively, you can opt for a concrete floor cleaner to do the job. However, it is better to stay away from using harsh chemicals that can harm the flooring and the environment.
  • Scrub brush: With this brush you can scrub the flooring after the application of the soap for deeper cleaning.
  • Water hose: After the scrubbing is complete, a water hose can help to wash off the soap and dirt from the scrubbing.
  • Safety gear: Wear gloves and protective eyewear to ensure your safety during the cleaning process.

  1. Cleaning steps
  • Dry cleaning:

Sweep or use a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt, leaves, and debris from the textured concrete surface. Make sure to get into the crevices and corners where dirt tends to accumulate.

  • Making the cleaning solution:

In a bucket, add warm water and mild dish soap. Create a properly diluted solution with these two ingredients. While harsh chemical cleaners are available, it is best to avoid such materials to ensure longevity of the concrete.

  • Apply water to the surface:

Use a water hose to apply water to the entire cleaning area or surface. This prepares the concrete for application of the cleaning solution.

  • Scrubbing:

Dip your scrub brush into the cleaning solution and rub at the textured concrete surface. Pay close attention to areas where there is excess dirt buildup or stains. Also, make sure to work in small sections to maintain uniformity in cleaning.

  • Rinsing:

After the thorough cleaning of the surface, use the water hose to wash off the soap and dirt that was dislodged due to the scrubbing.

  • Drying:

Allow the textured concrete flooring to air dry completely before returning objects to the area. This ensures that the surface is safe and free from slip hazards.
